Also referred to as ‘Sports guards/ Mouthguards’ but all share the same purpose of oral protection during a sport involving physical contact or moving objects.

There are lots of gum shields available, the cheapest available being the boil and bite ones that can be bought in sports shops or chemists. The cheap boil and bite gum shields tend to be poor fitting and a choking hazard due to the guard's ability to move around in the mouth too easily. It is important for any sports person undertaking any level of contact sport that requires a gum shield, to get a custom-made gum shield from a dentist.

A gum shield will help prevent lacerations, chipping or breaking teeth as a result of impact. It will act as a shock absorber to help protect against a painful broken or dislocated jaw, neurological damage and concussions. This is due to all gum shields being heat treated and pressure formed to maximise the impact absorption properties. As well as providing an accurately fitting, high comfort and functioning gum shield by precise gingival, fissure and tooth adaptation.
